Case Study
Scout Association Leaders’ Training
The Scout Association is moving its training for adult leaders to online delivery. This is part of a major initiative to upgrade training content to comply with new safety and child protection legislation and to roll out the new Scout curriculum plan.
Argo Media staff filmed a number of sequences for the course content on location with children from a number of age groups for the course content, which included activities and interviews.
The work of scout leaders and helpers was filmed to provide case studies on leadership skills, teaching methods and learning strategies, using fly-on-the-wall methods, structured interviews and scripted voiceover.
The project involved liaising with parents, Scout leaders and planning the filming to fit in with the activities that were not specifically staged for the cameras, so it was important not to “taint” the event for the children and to ensure that whilst capturing the material required for the training course, we did not impair the activity experience.
Best practice was essential to ensure that the activities demonstrated the correct methods, risk assessments and educational purpose intended.
The video formed part of a blended learning approach, which uses online delivery as its primary method, backed up with face-to-face learning when needed, workbooks and online assessments.
Whilst there was scope to take participants out of the activity for short periods to do interviews, the filming was being done with activities being staged for the benefit of the children, not the filming, so we needed to ensure that the filming process did not destroy or undermine the enjoyment and benefit to the children of the event.
