Case Study
Pep-up’ Project: North Somerset LEA Sports Partnership
For use by teachers, LSA’s, SMSA’s, adults other than teachers and the children themselves the DVD shows how to prepare for, lead and organise ‘dance’ exercise sessions in the classroom, corridor, hall and playground.
The DVD is more a ‘tool kit’ rather than just an exercise or dance video on DVD, there are explanations of how to develop and devise exercises as well as the music and exercises themselves, interviews with those currently using the system, text documents and a software program for building dance sequences are installable onto a pc or lap top from the disc.
The text documents provide detailed information to assist those organising and implementing ‘Pep-Up’ for children, general good classroom practice for exercising, how ‘Pep-Up’ fits in with the various strands of the National Curriculum etc. and the software programme runs on the PC and provides the ability to build example dance exercise sequences from the 60 video clips on the disc, which can then be projected to ‘lead’ the sequence in a class.
The content of the disc helps to support meeting the requirements of the National Curriculum in the following areas:
- Acquiring and developing skills
- Selecting and applying skills, tactics and compositional ideas
- Evaluating and improving performance
- Knowledge and understanding of fitness and health
Filming has taken place in a number of educational establishments and schools in North Somerset, to gather footage of the specific ‘Pep-Up’ exercises and sequences, interviews have been held with those implementing the system as well as the children taking part both in the classroom/corridor/ hall and also outside.
The issues of general consent being gained for all of the pupils at the schools to be filmed and the specific releases required for those ‘performing’ specifically were put in place, as well as applying shooting practices that did not disrupt the run of the day to day school activities.
